Breast Lift

Sometimes after child bearing, nursing, or extreme weight loss, breasts will lose volume and sag. A breast lift (mastopexy) can restore firmness and shape. The best candidates are physically and emotionally healthy and have small sagging breasts. Mastopexy can usually be performed on breasts of any size, but results may not last as long in larger breasts and may require a breast reduction along with a breast augmentation (implants) to achieve the best results.  However, if you’re planning on having children, are currently  nursing, or intend to lose 20 pounds or more in weight, these factors may offset the results of a breast lift procedure.

Before your breast lift surgery, your doctor should discuss with you the realistic expectations you should have depending on your age, size and shape of your breast, and the condition of the skin. He may also suggest implants which can help to lift and enhance the breast. He will also give you strict guidelines about smoking, drinking, and foods and medications to avoid. You will most likely be required to have a mammogram so any complications can be detected before you are in surgery. Plan to have someone who will be able to drive you to and from your surgery and stay with you for a few days.

With a breast lift, there is typically permanent signs of surgery, though they are not visible in a bra or bathing suit. The incision is made around the areola and in a vertical line from the nipple down to underneath the breast. Some patients with smaller breasts and minimal sagging can opt for a “doughnut” incision where breast tissue and skin is removed from around the areola, which results in greatly reduced visible scarring. With any surgery, there is a risk of infection, bleeding, or reaction to anesthesia. With mastopexy, expect to experience temporary bruising, swelling, discomfort, numbness, and dry breast skin. There is also a risk of loss nipple sensation and unevenly positioned nipples. You should be able to return to work in about a week but refrain from strenuous activity for about a month. The fading of scars can take several months to a year, eventually fading into thin white lines.  Breast lifts typically require more than time than breast augmentations, and thus, the total costs generally begin at $6,000 and upwards depending on the complexity of your specific procedure. For more information, please contact an Advisor at MCSA.
