Otoplasty

Otoplasty, or ear pinning, is an operation for people of all ages whose ears protrude excessively. While the majority of patients have the surgery done during childhood or as a teenager, adults can have success with this operation as well. The procedure itself takes about two to three hours, but the recovery time is quick with people being able to return to school or work usually within about five to seven days.

Risks associated with otoplasty are infrequent and relatively minor. However, with any surgery, there are certain risks that need to be taken into consideration. It is possible for blood clots to form on the ear which can possibly be drawn out with a needle. Infections are a possibility and may cause scar tissue, again requiring a needle to drain the area. The ear surgery may be done under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with a sedative, depending on the patient.

Your surgeon will make an incision behind the ear to either remove the cartilage or sculpt it to bend it back towards the head. Sometimes non-removable stitches are used to help the ears stay in place. This is done when the cartilage is folded back onto itself to create a more natural look. Sometimes, there is a faint scar left behind the ear that will fade with time. If only one ear protrudes, otoplasty surgery should be done on both ears so that they are more even.

Most patients feel fine within a couple of hours after ear surgery. Especially with small children, your doctor may suggest that you stay overnight in a hospital until the effects of the anesthesia wears off. The patients head is wrapped in a bandage but will be replaced by a lighter bandage in a couple of days. Stitches will also be removed or dissolved within that time. Strenuous activity, such as exercise, heavy lifting, or playground activity, must be avoided for several months. Remember that no one’s ears are symmetrical, so do not expect perfection. If you’ve discussed your expectations thoroughly with your doctor and are with a qualified surgeon, you should be extremely happy with the outcome of your improved look. For more information, please contact an Advisor at MCSA.
